Mick and his father entered the clinic quietly. Joe, Aaron, and Cassidy were coming in from the other side. Murphy had been alerted and they heard his deep voice speaking quietly to someone inside the women’s ward. They could hear another voice, one unfamiliar to Mick. He frowned. He had another premonition—things might just end up going tits up in the near future.

Mick gritted his teeth, feeling sick again. He didn’t know what else was clawing at his gut, but anger was right up there. He had a notion that the woman who may or may not be his mother was playing them. If this pastor was the monster he was turning out to be, then he was clever enough to bring in a ringer. He wasn’t sure what the purpose was. Unless this woman was the one responsible for a recent death on the property—another woman whose cubs had been rescued by Cassidy. The mountain lion shifter had been injured herself, and they had thought it the work of a federal agent, Gibbons. Maybe that was incorrect. Maybe this female was responsible. A female who’d had plastic surgery to conceal her identity? Convenient when wanting to conceal a criminal right under their noses.

Mick let loose his tiger, allowing the beast to sniff out the situation.

He growled in astonishment when Jamie pushed past, squeezed his shoulder lightly, then entered the ward.

Mick blinked as he overheard the ensuing conversation, staying hidden for now in the corridor outside.

“Hey, Murphy,” Jamie said cheerfully.

“Hey!” Murphy sounded surprised, astonished even.

“Mick told me to tell you that he wants to make an appointment to see you, but is too shy to do it.” Mick frowned even more, sharing a confused glance with his father. He shrugged, not sure what Jamie was up to.

“An appointment?” Murphy sounded a little amused, and coughed as though hiding a laugh. Mick peeped through the small glass panel in the door.

“Yes. Apparently he’s concerned about the size of his…you know what. He’s worried he might be too big for…well…me.” Mick bit back a growl of annoyance, meeting Jamie’s eyes through the glass. Jamie winked cheekily at him. The little imp was asking for trouble, making such an outrageous claim. When they got home, Mick would just show him how well they fit—again!

Murphy was grinning widely at Jamie, turning away for a moment. Mick glared at the pair of them, then his attention was snared by someone else in the room. He sniffed, trying to get her scent, but the female was unknown to him. His felt a snarl ripple in his throat and stalked inside the room, silent as a ghost. The expression on her face as she looked at Jamie was feral, disgusted—and she was about to pounce. Mick realized that Jamie had deliberately provoked a response from her. If she was working for the cult, she would be repulsed by any reference to a sexual relationship between two men. The cult had proven to be decidedly homophobic, their hatred for gay culture as intense as their hatred for shifters.
